is we have a unique opportunity to do something big. we have a chance to stabilize america's finances for a decade, for 15 years or 20 years. if we're willing to seize the moment. what that would require would be some shared sacrifice and a balanced approach that says we're going to make significant cuts in domestic spending. and i have already said i'm willing to take down domestic spending to the lowest percentage of our overall economy since dwight eisenhower. it also requires cuts in defense spending. and i've said that in addition to the $400 billion that we've already cut from defense spending we're willing to look for hundreds of billions more. it would require us taking on health care spending. and that includes looking at medicare and finding ways that we can stabilize the system so that it is available not just for this generation but for future generations. and it would require revenues. it would require, even as we're asking the person who needs a student loan or the senior citizen or, you know, people -- veterans who are trying to get by on a disability check, even as we'

toward a vote next week. the president says he still wants a big deal. but for the first time he's opening the door on senator mitch mcconnell's fall back plan which is gaining momentum on capitol hill. chuck todd was in the briefing room for the news conference. host of "the daily rundown" and luke russert. there was a movement from the president at least towards considering the mcconnell backup plan. what are the chances he still might get what he really wants which is a bigger deal? >> to me -- in a way put together to try to get through this. what you felt was the press conference was about was trying to frame the post game debate, if you will. you heard this from the speaker. suddenly they're back to distancing themselves from the debt ceiling. let's get to the debt ceiling part. we're running out of time on that. maybe there's still time to negotiate this grand bargain. that's sort of what i heard out of this. the president will sign anything that gets to his desk that seems to get through both houses of congress at this point. and then after that, maybe there's a conversat

.d also a song >> we've got another beautiful day at central park. another big crowd gathering. can't wait to get to that but a lot of news so right to that collision on the taxiway in boston last night. hundreds of passengers evacuated after the wing of a delta jumbo jet clipped the tail of another jet just months after a similar collision here in new york and abc's lisa stark is tracking this overnight. good morning, lisa. >> reporter: well, it was two delta flights, both loaded with fuel ready for takeoff. one rams into the other. it could have been much worse. this photo taken from inside the 767 clearly shows the damage. the wing tip of the jumbo jet sliced apart. the tail of the regional plane badly mangled. >> people were freaking out. the girl next to me was right by the wing crying and trying to jump on the emergency exit for a little bit. >> everybody said, what happened? >> reporter: it was still light out, around 7:30 last night when the planes collided. the regional jet apparently turned on to a taxiway perpendicular to the taxiway that the 767 was traveling on. the delta 767

. is that realistic at this point. >> well, in terms of getting that big agreement, it looks highly unlikely at this point, but certainly as you pointed out, the president joking that his campaign was built on hope and change. it will be interesting to see if that hope will also win out in this debate. but, look, what the president is pushing for still is the biggest deal possible. he acknowledged, though, that it's hard to do that, but nonetheless, he has been telling congressional lawmakers during negotiations all this week that if they can't get the biggest deal possible to attack the problem of the debt and the deficit over the long term, then they should still be ambitious. >> we are obviously running out of time, and so what i have said to the members of congress is that, you need over the next 24 to 36 hours to give me some sense of what your plan is to get the debt ceiling raised through whatever mechanisms they can think about and show me a plan in terms of what you're doing for deficit and debt reduction. if they show me a serious plan, i am ready to move. even if it requires some

examined all the pieces of a potential big deal, spending cuts, entitlement reforms, savings from the tax cut and employment insurance. the big deal is his preference but he'd accept a small $2 trillion deal. there's also a proposal by senators harry reid and mitch mcconnell to give the president the authority to extend the debt ceiling through 2012 without the consent. >> he described it as a last ditch effort in case we're unable to do anything else and what may look like something less than optimal today if we're unable to get to an agreement might look pretty good a couple of weeks from now. >> reporter: that fallback agreement is looking more and more likely. sources say that the person who made the most of the argument on wednesday, eric cantor, didn't even open his mouth yesterday in the meeting, and they say that they expect things to move forward, but they don't know how fast. there's no meeting today, but we will hear from the president at a news conference later this morning. >> bill, thanks. we will be carrying that news conference for you here on cbss apart of our special cov

that a big deal is hard to get. he seemed open to whatever republicans might be discussing up there on the hill. the president saying that if they have something that is a serious plan and they bring it to him, then he might be willing to move on it, even if it requires making some tough decision. the president was also asked about the so-called mcconnell plan which would raise the debt limit in three different increements through the end of 2012. here's what the president had to say about that. >> if washington operates as usual and can't get anything done, let's at least avert armageddon. >> reporter: so you avert armageddon because it takes care of problem number one, which is essentially raising the debt ceiling, but it doesn't take care of problem two, which is making any significant reductions in the deficit issue and the debt problem. so it does appear, at least based on what the president was saying, that he will at least be open to something that will prevent the u.s. from going into default and resulting in higher interest rates for all americans, which the president
